Balkans Unmastered
In the dominant political discourse in the West, the Balkans are portrayed as Europe’s anomaly: a notorious “hotbed of civil war” and a “bottleneck for illegal migration” from Africa and Asia. At the same time, the region is key to the EU’s economic and geopolitical interests, not least in creating “green future markets” and exploiting “cheap mobile labor.” With the “Balkans Unmastered” dossier, BG provides a space for diverse discussions about and from the region: from the legacies of socialism in Yugoslavia and post-socialist accumulation of capital and memory, to labor struggles and the convergence of social justice and environmental movements.
